DOUGLAS NAVARRA

JUNE 13 - JULY 12, 2026

This series of masking tape drawings was initiated during the winter of 2021 and initially they were experimental, tangential explorations. Coming from a "hard-edge" reductive painting background, I started to notice interesting qualities from the overlap of color tapes that I was using to mask off painted geometric shapes. These observations led me into an extended series of drawings, elevating the use of tape from a functional studio tool to the primary medium. Working with tape on paper freed me from the constraints of waiting for paint to dry. Ultimately, this immediacy opened up an endless arena of formal possibilities, allowing me to experiment with transparency, overlapping planes, and a more fluid, intuitive geometry.
