francine tint
march 21 - april 19, 2026
A New York based painter whose work has contributed meaningfully to the discourse of postwar American abstraction. Over more than five decades, her paintings have developed through an ongoing exploration of color, gesture, and spatial movement, guided by an intuitive process that allows the work to evolve through response, chance, and discovery. Color drives the work forward, functioning as an active and spatial force that shapes the experience of each painting. Through layering, adjustment, and moments of improvisation, Tint allows chromatic intensity and gesture to emerge through intuition and chance, creating works that unfold through sensation and presence.
Tint began her career in costume and fashion design working with clients such as David Bowie, Ridley Scott and MTV. She turned fully to painting in the 1970’s. Here paintings have been exhibited extensively in the United States and Europe and are held in the permanent collection of over 30 public institutions.
Tint’s work has been documented in the monograph Francine Tint: Paintings and in the feature length documentary Panoramic View: Portraits of the Artist Francine Tint. She continues to live, paint and teach in New York City.
