ELLEN JOURET-EPSTEIN
JUNE 13 - JULY 12, 2026
My work has been described as “some otherworldly mash-up of quilts and paintings and sculpture and something else altogether.” That “something else” is what I aim to discover through my work process.
My practice has developed through experimentation with a variety of processes and materials. The conversation of materials with mark-making, color and form is my motivation for making art. My work in all media has been approached as abstract collage: compositions of differing elements that cohere into unique final forms. I work with layering, contrast, texture, movement and mystery. Chance is an essential part of my process.
My recent work consists of three series that I continue to work on simultaneously. The Story series invites speculation about the seen and unseen. Each work begins with a single gesture and with no preconception of final form. The Space series is an exploration of a single form, the circle, and explores it in many variations. My latest work is a meeting of those two ways of working. I used to feel constrained about titling my work. But I’ve begun using text image transfers as a form of mark-making. As I skim the text passages I find interesting phrases that evoke qualities of the collage, and they become my titles.
