JASON TRAVERS

There is a childlike innocence that I enjoy while working in the studio. Painting is best when it feels like re-enacting childhood play: balancing blocks, telling stories, creating worlds; all the while painting away from words.
Not far from feelings, wonders, dreams, and memories, my paintings are a subjective arena in which to explore my relationship to history and the world. Not content with my paintings hanging passively on the wall, I am more interested in playing with the viewer’s spatial awareness. Often using diptychs and multi-panel configurations to achieve this aim, I am interested in the concept of part to whole. This format allows me to suggest mythical and formal dualities and seek to reveal unexpected relationships that impart a sense of tension, control, and release.
If we take the time to look into the surface of a pond- the reflections, the depth of the water, the rocks and fish hidden beneath- all these riches will reveal themselves slowly. The experience is best approached with a sense of patience, openness, and curiosity. I aspire to make my paintings slowly unfold in a similar manner. jasontravers.me
