celebration of the abstract : holiday
NOVEMBER 21 - DECEMBER 20, 2026
I love working with the specific qualities and textures of materials, and calling attention to their individual expression, accentuating the differences between those materials by making the contrast between them strong and obvious. The visual elements that characterize the work are the use of those materials, whether wood, a random pour, line, or flat saturated color. The matted flat application of oil paint is dense and saturated giving each color a strong impression and physical presence. Color is a large focus and preoccupation of my work, even when limited, and I want it to be felt chromatically and as a character. Beyond my own immediate pleasure in mixing and calibrating the color to its exact intensity, warmth or coolness, and saturation, the sense of color physicality and its light imbues each piece.
The role of the wood support panel has varied through the years from inspiration, to foil, to active background. I like working against or with a given that presents an active ground and an interesting material presence. Further activating the ground is the random pour. Both things influence decisions made going forward.
I have been committed to working non-objectively for many years. The language of abstraction holds an allure for me and reveals my interest in architecture and sculpture. Abstraction is a flexible and suggestive language with the ability to evoke a range of associations, and non-specific emotional or meditative responses, free from specific references or imagery. Abstraction invites us to slow down and pay closer attention to what we are seeing and the unspoken relationships.
