A study for a work of art is typically a record of one’s thinking and manipulation of elements done prior to approaching a work one intends to bring to completion. These small pieces are done after finishing “I was Supposed to Build Something Solid - Elusive Threshold# 5” 60x72” 2025, acrylic on canvas.

In the process of working on that painting I discovered and invented movements, spatial loops, projecting planes and arcs that weren’t in the original plan. I did several small, quick extrapolations summarizing the gestures and geometry into tape lines informed by the finished painting.  Each study is slightly different but originates from the same base information.

I have engaged in this process for many years as I learn from my own paintings. It’s kind of like journaling since I’m recording what has already occurred attempting to understand it more clearly.
