These works are a melding of several of my passions. I’ve loved using strong colors ever since I first discovered Matisse when I was a child. I begin by painting with acrylics on heavy paper, allowing the brushstrokes to be revealed, adding depth to the look of the papers. Second, there is collage. I’ve found collage to be one of the most helpful tools both for deliberately composing and also for surprising myself. By continually shifting and rearranging my painted paper shapes, the most unexpected designs arise. Then there is my long held love of sculpting. Once I have a composition arranged with the paper shapes, I turn to the sculptural element. I cut up plywood with my band saw and finally, glue the paper shapes on to the plywood surfaces. The end result is a sculptural collage, one that I hope embodies a sense of playfulness and joy.
