LIZ ATLAS

celebration of the abstract : holiday

NOVEMBER 21 - DECEMBER 20, 2026

My work is about the engagement of formal elements, but always as a means to conjure up the physical and emotive expressions these engagements can evoke—conjured up from the deep chasm of stored memory. This mix of mind and body—formal and intuitive—moves the work beyond the balanced, towards the quirky; asymmetrical, to breath a playful dynamism into each piece ,while still emitting a fragrance of familiar formal rigor.

This way of working enables me to move seemlessly between two and three dimensions, as well as along the continuum from non-objective to associative work. For me, all of my work has some associative qualities, AND is essentially about the abstract elements of color, shape, line, etc. Thus a chair painting uses the familiar structure of “chair” to anchor my exploration of the shapes I've been exploring in my sculptural work ,with a deeper dive into color, surface, light and line.

Things are really rockn when the work creates moments where all this comes together with equal weight, transcending the need to be categorized into one bucket or another.
