MIMI YOUNG

JUNE 13 - JULY 12, 2026

In these works, I reference impressions of my immediate surroundings and the memories they hold.

My work has always been about mark making, gestural lines and shapes become a shorthand for my experiences and memories. A lot of these marks, patterns, and shapes are repeated from one work to the next, I find something comforting about the familiarity of repetition.

I use collage to either seamlessly integrate new elements or to deliberately disrupt an image, challenging the viewer’s perception of space and depth. Color is one of the key components to my work. I don’t consider myself to be a colorist, I use color relationally and to distinguish space.

While working, I am thinking of a story; a story of the images I’ve created, the space where they sit and their scale and relationship to each other. I like to imply the narrative rather than force an idea.

I get excited by what I can’t see yet try to, what is hidden in plain sight and the realization that what is not there is just as important as what is.

The work here is part of an ongoing series that explores my observations of the forest’s organic, layered depths and distressed, disturbed rural environments.
