“My work has always been process-oriented, and I let materials, chance and the moment direct the outcome.,” says Murray Hochman. The “dot” paintings in this exhibition, from 2002-2003, were no exception: they resulted from the accidental sputtering of cold aerosol paint cans in an unheated barn.
Hochman, who was born and raised in New York City, currently works out of a converted barn in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts. For over 60 years, he has explored the possibilities of light, color, geometry and gesture, working primarily with auto lacquer aerosols paints, whose luminous surfaces shift with the light.
“The parameters of my work are both formal and expressionistic,” he adds, “veering between concept and impulse, and their fusion.”
