In these three paintings — The Part-Time Alchemist, State of Play, and Alterations — I work in a subconscious, impulsive way to discover what rises to the surface which, more often than not, are ongoing themes and preoccupations.

The Part-Time Alchemist deals with the creative act of conjuring something golden and unexpected out of nothing.

State of Play refers to an artist's mindset of having no agenda—arriving at thestudio open to spontaneous discovery through play.

Alterations speaks to the endless process of revising and editing. There are many layers beneath the surface that brought us to this final image.

I think of my work as a type of journaling in paint that I find useful—not necessarily for being productive as an artist, but for remaining self-aware as a person. I think of it as a message in a bottle to myself.
