Backing Out of a Corner (2014) emerged from my early explorations of the Hudson Valley landscape and the hidden traces of its industrial past lying beneath forested fields and tall grasses. Constructed from cardboard and layered with colorful printed papers featuring imagery from nature and geometric patterns, the work exists between painting, sculpture, and collage.

Working intuitively through cutting, layering, and reconstruction, I transform fragments of observation and memory into constructed landscapes that shift between abstraction and representation. As a structuralist, I deliberately turned to collage to loosen the rigidity of a formal approach, allowing chance, improvisation, and visual surprise to become part of the process.

View from multiple angles, the sculpture continually changes to appearance, creating shifting relationships between surface, structure, and space. Through collage, I reassemble fragments of lived experience into new visual and emotional forms.
