The energetic relationship of shapes as they come together, pull apart, are tied and interrupted by lines, continues to fascinate me, always being attentive to how the eye moves around the piece. As a graphic designer as well, my eye has been cultivated over very many years, to pay attention to the black letters of type on a page, paragraphs, line breaks of type, which leads one to communication but also to invitation. In Collage, this refinement extends to careful color relationships, synthesized by years of working with color as a designer, but with more free reign in the artwork — but the questions I ask myself are similar — what color sits next to the other and what occurs in that juxtaposition — how much of it, in what shape, to foster the dialogue between shapes.

Line gives visual direction and has become increasingly important — its spontaneity in juxtaposition with improvised shapes. Black drawn lines and lines thinly cut from paper ask the viewer to ‘look here’ and now ‘look there’ — my visual conducting and conversation within the work, and with the viewer. The process is improvisational — trusting my eye fully. I’m accustomed to working from a blank ‘canvas’, and going through the patient stages of evolution and flow. Sometimes I get there with a bit more ease, like a floating leaf being moved by the natural current in the stream, but usually there is also the tossing and turning, bumping up against branches and stones, but arriving at a surprised destination, one I didn’t anticipate but am pleased to discover.
